Event Report: Khanacross 03.07.10

Filed under:

Christian Autosport's second Khanacross for the year started a little colder, but in otherwise similar fashion. With 26 entrants and all range of experience in all range of cars it was sure to be an interesting day.

As in the first event earlier this year, the field of 26 starters began the day with an untimed run on the top field, with the first competitive test being the first run on the bottom field. The untimed run is a good chance for people to get a feel for the conditions (soft in this case) and to test any modifications (or lack of) since the previous event. It's also a good chance for the Juniors to get nerves out of the way before the pressure comes.

The first timed run had Brad Glasson streaking ahead with pulling a full 2 seconds on the nearest competitor, Ken Albury. Test 3 wasn't as easy, with Brad less than a second in front of the day's eventual winner, Peter Harris. In fact the top were all within 3 seconds of the fastest time, proving that the day could have gone to anyone. Even more interesting is that the same top ten consisted of 5 rear wheel drives and 5 front drivers.

The entire field consisted of a broad range of vehicles, from the classic Datsuns and Escorts to the more modern (by comparison) 121, Pulsar and Applause. Out to play for the second consecutive event was the ever impressive Beetle Special of Peter Wood, watching him negotiate the tighter areas of the bottom field is a testament to his driving skill, not to mention his commitment in driving an open vehicle to winter events. Niven Cattanach has seemed to have gotten a firm grasp on his Honda Prelude, managing to keep the long bonnet of the car intact thus far. And who could forget the tiny but mighty Starlet of the Stevens, Bob managing to put in consistently fast times and Josh getting visibly faster across the day.

Unfortunately after setting the fastest times on the first 3 tests, Brad's motor expired on Test 5, effectively ending his campaign despite switching to the 121 to finish the event. An inexplicable Wrong Direction on Test 8 pushing him further down the order. This turn of events opened the door for Peter Harris to take the lead with Bob Stevens nipping at his heels and Matt Hottes not far behind either.

By the end of 9 timed tests, Peter held off Bob by 0.64sec- a tight margin at the best of times, with Matt rounding out the top 3 another 3 seconds behind. It must be mentioned that the next two cars were stock (aside from some creative stickers on the Applause), and I must say that they were pushed pretty hard too. Jordan was the first Junior in the 121, seeming to be getting more confident in these types of events. A special mention must go to Steven Hughes and James Francis, piloting the big Falcon around in fine V8 style and having a ball doing so. I don't think I saw them without a smile on their faces all day.

A big thanks to all that came out on the day and to the officials who made the day happen, I really appreciate that our club is willing the put the work in to make events happen for others and provide a great day of motorsport every time.

See you next event!
